What to know
- OpenAI describes AI-assisted CAD, circuit design and simulation workflows, while noting that manufacturing still needs expert review.
From text to physical prototypes
In a November 3, 2026 update, OpenAI described work on AI-assisted mechanical and electrical engineering, including CAD models, printed circuit boards and simulations. A small team created a test device with model assistance, but the manufacturer still needed several review rounds for tolerances and production constraints.
Where this can help
Teams can use AI to prepare drawings, compare design alternatives and document cross-discipline changes. The result should remain a reviewed engineering proposal. Electrical safety, material limits, manufacturability and test measurements require domain experts.
Infrastructure behind the workflow
Design files, simulations and version histories need controlled access, dependable compute and recoverable storage. Before moving such workloads to a cloud server, estimate memory, disk growth and backup needs. See Kiava cloud servers and our backup restore guide.
